"I left knowing more about how to dance and about how to use my body, but also how to throw knowledge out the window and just move through air and space." -Silas Riener, Merce Cunningham Company

CHOOSE YOUR OWN FESTIVAL!

The Festival is designed to be flexible so that it can meet students' particular needs and interests. For this reason, we ask that students choose one of the following ways to focus their training. In each case, students will be assigned a faculty mentor who will help them explore their area of interest and customize their Festival experience. If there is some other course of study you would like to follow, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I WANT IT ALL!*

Experience the full range of possibilities at the Festival. Attend all classes and workshops listed in the daily curriculum and have the opportunity to perform in one or more works to be shown the last weekend of the festival.

PERFORMANCE AND TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT*

Same as I Want it All!, but with the opportunity to perform in two or three works, to be performed in our weekend concert series.

MEETING THE PREREQUISITES*

Complete the prerequisites for the Laban/Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies' Certification program. Focus will be placed on the Laban Movement Analysis work and preparing for the LIMS program. Full participation in technique classes is not a requirement of this focus.

INJURY PREVENTION AND RECOVERY

Work individually with faculty to create your own healing program for recent and recurring injuries, and also learn to recognize and correct habits which lead to injuries. Emphasis will be placed on using the injuries as a learning tool for growth and development. Daily technique classes and participation in repertory are not a requirement of this focus.

YOGA and DANCE HEALING MODALITIES

Adapt your coursework to focus on yoga and work with mentors involved in the physical therapy, Pilates, Laban, and Yoga disciplines to investigate career or health work for your own needs. Explore how these modalities support each other. Also appropriate for the transitioning, injured, recovering, or retired dancer. Daily technique classes and participation in repertory are not a requirement of this focus.

EXPANDED THIS YEAR

CHOREOGRAPHY AND CREATIVITY

Explore new creative territory. Create three works to be performed by students at the Festival, receive support and mentoring by Festival faculty, work with Festival musicians to create a score, and participate in the Choreography Lab, described above. (Limit: 5 participants; students interested in this Focus must submit a video with a sample of their work with their registration.)

FOR THE EDUCATOR

Focus your time at the Festival on integrating concepts presented in technique, Choreography Lab, anatomy/kinesiology, and yoga classes. Invigorate yourself and your teaching with new approaches to training and choreography by selecting a course load that inspires you. Participants are welcome for single weeks if unavailable to attend entire Festival. (Limited to participants with a focus on developing or furthering teaching skills.)

FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR

Immerse yourself in a college dance experience, and discuss college programs with faculty and students. Our faculty teach at highly regarded programs, including The Juilliard School, NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, the five Colleges in Northampton, Princeton University, and SUNY Purchase. You will also be able to dialogue with students and faculty about college programs and choices at our Dance on Campus seminar. (Limit: 6 participants)

*Full participation in the “I Want it All” and “Meeting the Pre-Requisites” focus completes the pre-requisites for the Certification Program at the Laban/Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Laban Movement Analysis, and Anatomy/Kinesiology.
